Common questions
How much does it cost to build a deck per m² in Australia?+
Supplied and installed, treated pine runs about $180–$350 per m², hardwood like merbau $320–$600, composite $300–$600, and aluminium $450–$900. A raised deck (needing a substructure and balustrade) or a roofed deck costs more again.
Composite vs timber decking — which costs more?+
Timber (especially treated pine) is cheaper to buy and install upfront. Composite costs more initially but needs far less maintenance — no oiling or staining — so many people choose it for the lower lifetime cost. Hardwood sits in between on price with a premium natural look.
Does a raised deck cost more than a low one?+
Yes. Once a deck is more than about a metre off the ground it needs a stronger substructure (taller posts and bearers) and, for safety, a balustrade — both of which add materials and labour, commonly $80–$200 per m² on top of the decking itself.
Do I need council approval to build a deck?+
It depends on your state and the deck's size and height. Many low, small decks fall under exempt development, but larger or raised decks often need approval. Always check with your local council — your builder can guide you through it.
